Trigun-Review (So Much Hype...)
26 Episodes. The 8th Volume Has a Nice Design For The Menu With a 1950's Newspaper Feel To It But The Others Are Barely Functional and Have No Extra Content,Save For Some Horrible Drawings(Art)...

Art/Animation: C
The Art Is Bland and Reminds Me Of Very Old Comics. Some Shots Of Vash,Especially The Eyecatch That Show Him As "The Stampede" But Most Draw Him As a Stick Figure With An Odd Haircut And Very Linear Shape. You Can See Tons Of Lines and It Is Obvious Those Are The Sketches, Not Any Sort Of Animation Or Reworking. The Males Almost All Look Alike And The Female Character Are Female By Voice Only. The Special Effects Are Unimpressive. Unimpressive Defines My Opinion Of The Entire Series.
Story: B-
The Initial Half Is Just "Cliché" Far West Fanfare; Characters Have Obvious Nicknames, Water Is Rare And Bandits/Outlaws Roam The Landscape.Vash's Identity Is Kept Hidden For That Period and He Is Only The Shadow of a "Gunfighter".Once Wolfwood Arrives,It Gets Slightly Better But The Insurance Girls Remain Bland And Boring (Two Words I Will Be Abusing In This Review). The Second Half Gets Slightly Better As More About Vash's Past Is Explained But It Soon Returns To Vash Duels X, Barely Finding a Weakness And Suffering Several Fatal Wounds Then a Little "Comedy". Rince And Repeat.Although Perfectly Logical,The Ending Leaves a Bitter Taste.
Voice Acting: B
If Johnny Young Bosh Made His Career With This Role, I Am Not Surprised His Anime Credits Are So Few. Some Veterans Try To Fill The Gaping Holes Of This Horrible Script But Alas,It Was Doomed To Mediocrity. This Is The "Best Of The Worst" Category For This Long And Painful Series. Of Note Is The Short Role By Michelle Ruff and Her Lovely Voice As Well As a Shorter Role Still By Bridgett Hoffman.
Music: C
Almost No Music In The Series Aside From The Slightly Catchy Opening Song That Does Get Old Fan, Unless You Are a Die Hard Rock Fan. I Am Not. I Except J-Pop In Japanese Anime,Enough Said. The Closing Song Is Terrible,On Par With The Images On Screen. There Is One Very Nice Ballad In Episode 14 and a Few Notes Of a Sad Song From Vash's Past.
Fan Service: D
Ugly Girls,No Panties,Mostly Flat-Chested Women. The Few Attractive Females Are Those That Appear In a Single Episode While The Girls Following Vash Are Just Terrible.I Thought Kaoru From Kenshin Was Plain...More Similarities With Season 3 Of Kenshin Later.
I Was Expecting Much More From This Series. So Many Fans Rate It So Highly. To Me,It Is a Disastrous Failure. The "True" Vash The Stampede,While We Rarely See Him As The Legendary Outlaw IS Cool But The Weak Shell Of a Man We See Most Of The Time Is No Better Than An Harem Ecchi Main Character.
What The Hell Are Double Dollars ? The 60 Billion Double Dollar Man...Why Not 40 Billion Triple Dollars Or 30 Billion Quadruple Dollars ? And Yes, C Cents...Iles Instead Of Miles.Really Original Guys....
Trigun Is The Life and "Adventures" Of An Invincible Outlaw With a Huge Bounty On His Head That Attempts To Leads a Quest For Peace.(Just Like Kenshin From Rurouni Kenshin)He Has Sworn Off Killing For "Her" and Attempts To Hide His True Identity.Bored Yet ?
Characters:
Vash The Stampede: A Lone Gunman Roaming The Far West With a Tearful Past and Spectacular Aim.The Actual Vash Is Little More Than a Goofy,Naive Brat That Screams Like a Girl,Devours Donuts and Cannot Handle His Liquor.Clueless and Nice To Everyone,He Gets Backstabbed Most Of The Time and Then Cries About It.When He "Fights".He Has The Capacity Or Sheer Luck Of Evading Bullets, Objects and Most Everything Even At Close Range.Yet He Uses His Gun Only As a Last Resort and Ends Up Scarred.Of Course,People Congratulate Him But As Soon As It Slips That He Is The "60 Billion Double Dollars Man",He Is Thrown Out Of Towns. His True Destructive Powers Are Rarely Shown. His Internal Struggles Make Him Somewhat Entertaining. If You Think You Are Getting The Cool Silver Gun Using Outlaw With The Sunglasses and Piercing Yellow Eyes Think Again; Most Of The Time It Is Vash The Failure.
Nicholas D.Wolfwood: The Most Interesting Of The Protagonists,His Past Is As Grim As Vash's.Now a Travelling Priest,Wolf Drinks,Smokes,Swears And Does Not Hesitate To Kill If It Means Saving His Life Or One Of His Friend's.Much More Realistic Than Vash,He Attempts To "Awaken" Vash To The Real World With This Quote (Most Likely Annoyed Of Pure White Paladin-Type Heroes Like I Am):
"Give The Goody-Goody Routine a Rest,Vash!" Word!
Wolfwood Also Has a Few Fun Gadgets That Allows For Some Comic Relief In The Form Of a Portable Confessional To "Make Ends Meet" And a Gigantic Cross On His Back (J-C,Anyone?) That Is Actually a Weapon Storage Unit As Well As a Machine Gun And Bazooka. There Is Much More To Him Than Meets The Eyes And He Acts As The Voice Of Reason For The Group On Many Occasions. My Personal Favorite Among The Cast.
Merryl: The Short,Annoying,Bossy,Pessimistic and Ugly Black-Haired Hag That Follows Vash As An Employee Of The Bernardelli Insurance Society. Her Co-Worker Milly Describes Her Attitude:
"Boy,She Has a Short Fuse."
Other Minor Characters Say That She "Has No Eye For Men" and "Will Never Know Womanly Happiness."
At First She Hates Vash And Does Not Believe He Is The Legendary Battousai...Erm,Gunman.Yes,She Is An Uglier Still Verion Of Kaoru From Rurouni Kensin and Played By Dorothy Melendrez Who Seems To Always Play Mean,Obnoxious and Cruel Women As Is The Case With Possibly The Worst Ever,Naru From Love Hina.Do Not Get Me Wrong,Melendrez Is a Great Voice Actress,Although She,Like Everyone In Trigun Offers a Sub Par Performance. It Seems That Was Enough For Trigun. So,In Closing,She "Suddenly" Has Feelings For Him Towards The Last Volume But Never Expresses Them.Milly Implies It.Her Nickname Is "Derringer Merryl".Her Overuse Of Truisms Is Painful:
"People Only Drown Themselves In Alcohol When They Have Something To Forget. It Is An Escape From Reality." And
"The Birds Of a Feather Flock Together." Refering To Vash And Wolfwood.
Milly: Adventurous,Joyful,Caring,Slightly Naive,Friendly and Quirky,Milly Helps Lessen The Doom and Gloom Of Her Partner Merryl.Tall and Large,She Looks Like a Football Player But With a Soft Smile, Beautiful Blue Eyes and Plain Brown Hair. She Has a Bad Habit Of Giving Away Too Much Information But It Is Part Of Her Charm.A Hard Worker,She Carries a Large Hook Cannon Giving Her The Nickname Of "Stun Gun Milly".She Seems To Have Feelings For Wolfwood.Lia Sargent Has a Delightful Voice.
Legato Bluesummers: The Main Antagonist Of The Series Until His Boss Is Revealed,He Revels In The Death and Suffering Of Others.
"The Power Of Death Is Intoxicating."
Possessing Great Psychic Powers That Are Never Explained He Can Make Others Swell Up and Explode,Can Use Telepathy and Apparently Vash Can As Well.Yet Another Unexplained Mystery. He Looks Like a Nobleman,Enjoys Fine Wine and Dining and Talks Politely and With More Flair Than Anyone Else In The Series. While He Could Have Killed Vash Several Times,Along With Everything Else (He Refers To The End Of Everything) Including Knives. It Makes Little Sense He Would Take Orders From Him and Ultimately Ends Up Begging For Vash To End His Life and Uses Hostages To Get His Way.Richard Cansino (Kenshin Of Rurouni Kenshin Fame) Shows Off His Range By Playing An Inspired Villain.
Knives: Vash's Brother. Also an Alien, He Thinks Of Himself As Superior To Humans. As Children,Their Only Physical Difference Was That His Hair Was More White Than Yellow. As a Boy,Knives Was Responsible For The Death Of Most Humans Attempting To Reach Earth. He Creates The Infamous "Angel Arms",His Black and Vash's Silver Gun That Can Become Cannons With Power Similar To a Nuclear Device. The Character Of Knives,Especially As a Boy Is Quite Deep.In This Case,Vash Was The Stupid, Idealistic One Suffering From "Useless Sentimentalism" According To Knives.A Discourse Similar To Wolfwood's.The Incident In Which He Saves a Butterfly From a Spider By Killing The Latter Explains The Elitist Yet Practical Philosophy Of Knives Compared To Vash Who Idly Looked,Trying To Figure a Way How To Save Both Insects And Ultimately Does Nothing,Cries and Criticizes His Brother.Over a Hundred Years Later,Knives Has The Same Ideology: "I Kill Spiders To Save Butterflies. It Is Pure Logic." As We See Flashbacks Of The First Humans Fighting Each Other For Water,Then Food,Then Land Only To End Up Endangering Their Ecosystem. His Methods,Especially On The SEEDS May Have Been Extreme And Caused Many Fatalities But Knives Is Right And Has To Die For Vash To Finally Discard His Red Suit and Weapon In a Very Disappointing Ending.Special Mention Goes To Joshua Seth (Of Digimon Fame) For The Brilliant Voice Acting Of Young Knives.
There Are a Few Interesting Side Characters Such As Frank Marlon,The Ex Gunsmith That Turned To Alcoholism After The Death Of His Family By a Gun He Made And Gave To The Criminal That Ended Up Killing Them. His Law Of Equality Is Quite Interesting:If Helping Someone Only Leads To Hurting Someone Else,What Good Is It In The End ? He Chooses To Do Nothing. It Makes a Lot Of Sense To Me,For One. The "Boss" Characters Are The Gung Ho Guns And Are Only Defined By Their Name. One Of Them Is "The Blade"...Oh Surprise...a Samurai That Uses a Katana, a Chaplain,a Horn Freak (Saxophone Player), a Cyclops (Woman With an Eyepatch) and Many Other Well-Researched Names Make Up This Group.
All In All,Trigun Suffers From The "Superhero Syndrome" As I Call It Where Even Experienced Gunmen Miss At Point Blank,Survive Fatal Wounds And Evade The Most Ridiculous Of Impacts.Wolfwood Being As Good a Shot As Vash Makes Little Sense.Vash Is In "God Mode" In The Action Scenes But In Most Of The Anime a Ridiculously Incompetent Boy That Gets Some Minor Laughs But The Entire Series Is a Massive Failure With "Some" Good Ideas,Especially The Younger Flashback Scenes That Are Sadly Too Short To Make Way For Some More Childlike Combat.
I Will Leave You With This Quote For Us Perverts That Made Me Smile From Young Vash:
"All He Did Was Grab Her Rear-End."
Sometimes An Innocent Gesture Is Just An Innocent Gesture.Take That Prudes and Feminists!
If You Are One Of Those Two Groups,You Will Be Happy That The Innocent Gesture Does End Up Killing That Character As He Suddenly Becomes a Rape Candidate Because Of It...
